HS Students join EDSOR Peace Congress

200 delegates from Gr. 9 to 12 of the 4 different schools namely, ICA, Xavier, LA Salle and Poveda attended the yearly EDSA-Ortigas Peace Congress entitled: "Luntiang Hakbang ISang Paninindigan" at La Salle Greenhills last January 13 to 14, 2017.

The two-day event was not the typical EDSOR camp that the students were used to. This year, instead of just having fun and teen friendly activities, the students were also able to experience a real parliament set-up. Since the theme this year revolved around issues in our environment, the first day of the congress was focused on making the students aware of our environmental condition through various activities and a talk.  The day started off with a talk by Vice President Leni Robredo. Vice President Robredo inspired and motivated the delegates to become more aware about the issues our environment is facing, and to think of more innovative ways to utilize technology to help tackle these environmental issues.

On the second day, the students started by proposing 4 resolutions which the whole body would decide which ones to pass to the congress. For this second day, the National Youth Commission (NYC) was invited to help assist the Student Council leaders of the 4 different schools to hold the parliament session. At the end of the day, the peace congress was a success as two resolutions out of the 4 were passed to the office of Secretary Gordon.

This year's EDSOR might not be all about fun, but it made students realize that they can already make a change in our world through the turning over of their resolutions. It was an opportunity for the students to step out of their comfort zones and interact with individuals from other schools who shared the same interests and passions.

In the end, this year’s Peace Congress made the students realized how powerful and influential the youth is, and how they have the capability and potential to truly propagate discourse and fight for the betterment of society. (Elaine Ang/Arianna Garcia)
